Drain Fields #868844

Asked May 17, 2024, 10:22 AM EDT

My neighbor and I have septic drain fields that are about 30 feet apart and run parallel to one another. This creates a valley in between the drain fields that is always wet, sometimes with standing water. Are there any plants that we can put in between the drain fields that will soak up water w/out harming the drain fields?

Expert Response

Good Afternoon,
Native plants are an easy option for rain gardens because they tolerate short periods of standing water and can deal with drought conditions during hot summer months. Their deep root system also aids in water infiltration. It is best to purchase established plants since seeds can easily be washed away.  Some suggestions are butterfly milkweed, purple coneflower, or golden alexanders.

I hope this helps.  Thanks for using our service.
