Norfolk pine #868834

Asked May 17, 2024, 9:10 AM EDT

I have a Norfolk Pine, it's 10 years old! I live on the coast and am wondering if it can go outside for the summer? I also was given a lemon tree recently and want to know if it can be outside for summer? Thanks for your help. Patty

Expert Response

Hi Patty - Thanks for your questions.

Your Norfolk pine can go outside as long as the temperature doesn't routinely get below 50 deg F.   Put it in full sun if at all possible and ensure it gets regular water.   It is normally hardy in USDA zones 10-11 but you are in Zone 9b.  If the temperature gets down to 35 deg F, your Norfolk pine could be killed so you should not plant in the ground here.

Your lemon can definitely go outside for the summer.    Here is a helpful Oregon State Extension article about growing Meyer lemons - https://today.oregonstate.edu/news/pucker-it%E2%80%99s-time-talk-lemons#:~:text=Meyer%20lemons%2C%20which%20grow%20in,Hand%20pollination%20is%20an%20option.
