Good morning Extension Staff!
Thank you in advance for your help on the following.
OSU Literature on Hops Production has been an amazing resource for me as I plan to grow a little less than 1/2 acre of Hops on my property here in Stevenson WA. Discing my plot prior to infrastructure installation and rhizome planting was next on the to do list until I ran across an abandoned septic system. No habitable structure has been present for 10+ years so I am not necessarily worried about human waste. What I am concerned with is any metals, pharmaceuticals, household chemicals or other such potential contaminants.
My questions to you, your staff or students, is how concerned should I be? Is testing warranted? If so, what specifically might I want to test for based on the limited info I have at this point. Are there specific contaminants that Hops are susceptible to picking up from the soil? Any guidance on the topic would be much appreciated!
And again, thank you in advance! I figured this might be an interesting topic of discussion as many rural towns are making the conversion to sewer and more and more land owners are trying to reclaim use of significant portions of property that was originally set aside for septic systems.
If this question does not interest you, please feel free to suggest who I reach out to next.
Thank you,
