Soil test results questions #868713

Asked May 16, 2024, 1:00 PM EDT

Hi, according to the soil test results, the recommended fertilizer ratio is 10-0-0, which means my veggie garden needs nitrogen but not phosphorus or potassium, correct? Can you please recommend a product or will I find fertilizer with this ratio? Also should I be adding compost to my garden? My veggie garden consists of 8 ft by 4 ft raised beds. I appreciate your time and expertise. Thank you very much

Expert Response

Yes - your soil needs only nitrogen, and you should be able to find this type of fertilizer at many nurseries or big-box stores.  Look for a large number at the beginning - this is the nitrogen.  The other two numbers should be very small or zero.    You may not need to add compost to your garden, particularly if your soil test shows that it is high in phosphorus.  Compost can increase phosphorus levels.  For detailed information on this topic, see https://extension.umn.edu/yard-and-garden-news/how-much-compost-should-you-apply-your-garden-spring
