What is this bug? #868692

Asked May 16, 2024, 11:36 AM EDT

We just found hundreds of these tiny bugs on the inside and outside of our front door. What are they and what should we do about them? Thank you!

Expert Response

Although they're hard to see clearly (we realize it's hard to get a good photo of something so small), they may be Clover Mites. These common mites are more of a nuisance than a problem and are known to appear in large numbers, and usually disappear almost as quickly. Management information is included on the linked page, though it usually just entails vacuuming them up and sealing any gaps/cracks (where possible) to exclude them from getting inside.

Thank you so much for the very fast reply!  I realize that I left out a fact in my initial question – we had a bird nest on a wreath on our front door, and the mites were all over the wreath and the outside area on the door near it and seem to have come in through the door hinge crack.  So they may be bird mites.  I’m not sure whether that changes anything in terms of how to deal with them?

We happen to have a web page about Bird Mites as well, though it doesn't change much about management options, which still boil down to exclusion, removal of the material attracting them (the nest in that case), and just vacuuming up those that wander inside.
