Growing Radishes #868679

Asked May 16, 2024, 10:31 AM EDT

I have sent this question to you twice within the last 7 - 10 days but I have received no replies stating that you have received the question and no answer to the question. Usually you tell me that you have received the question within a day. Have you received this question? Please reply. 1. What percentage of the radish seeds in a packet of seeds should normally become edible radishes assuming that the seeds are good, the sun and soil are right, and the seeds are planted correctly? 2. What percentage of the radishes produced should normally be 1/2 '' or larger in diameter? 3. Assuming all other conditions are right, is the critical factor that determines the percentage of yield and the percentage of radishes that are 1/2'' or larger the amount of fine loose soil above and below the soil? Would 1'' of fine loose soil above the seed and 1'' of fine loose soil below the seed the ideal quantity? 4. Does it matter very much if the seeds are a year old? In March I planted 2 packets of radish seeds in a planter that is about 6' X 12". Only about 1/4 of the seeds produced radishes and only about 1/4 of the radishes were 1/2'' or larger. I planted the seeds in about an inch of fine loose soil so most of the seeds laid upon compacted soil, not fine soil. I wonder whether this is the reason for the poor yield. The seeds that I planted were seeds left over from last spring, which is when I bought them. Could this be the reason for he poor yield? Last year, when I did not use any fine loose soil, the yield was even worse.

We have answered both submissions relatively soon after receiving the questions, so perhaps answers (as well as the original Ask Extension acknowledgement) wound-up in a spam folder for some reason.
