Dead branches on maple #868624

Asked May 15, 2024, 7:14 PM EDT

We just moved into a new house and have a beautiful maple in the backyard. However it looks like there are some dead or diseased branches. Should we just trim the parts off that don't have leaves? Or should we contact an arborist?

Hi Abigail and thanks for your pictures and question about your beautiful maple tree. It looks pretty healthy, but the side branches are extending out pretty far. I think I would contact an ISA certified arborist who could look at the whole picture and tell you if you need to pull it back a little. They can also tell you if it is Verticillium Wilt that caused the dead branches.  Here is a site that will help you locate an arborist. You might want to get several opinions if you don't think the first one seems right.

Good luck with your tree!
