Weed identification #868581

Asked May 15, 2024, 3:19 PM EDT

Hi, I have a perennial weed in my flower beds and I'd like to identify it to then remove it. The plant sends out shoots from large diameter tap roots, of which is appears to have multiple and over a pretty large area. The tap root is bright white when severed and the shoots it sends up are milky white with pink tinges. I recall it puts out flowers, but it's been some time since I've let it get to that point. I've attached pictures of some of the shoots.

Expert Response

Hello, happy to help.

This is Japanese knotweed, a noxious weed that should be eradicated. It can take years (I know, I've done it and succeeded) of repeatedly pulling it and cutting it down when I haven't time to dig it out so that the roots have to keep using up stored energy. Persistence is the name of the game. And if you can keep it from spreading beyond where it is, it's easier to make it a twice weekly, if not daily, check of the area to keep challenging it.

Here is a link to more information about the Japanese knotweed.

Good-luck!
