Is there something we can do to get rid of these pesty little insects without damaging bees etc that are helpful to the environment?

Washington County Oregon

Expert Response

Hi and thanks for your question about getting rid of one insect without harming another. The answer is probably no, but I really need to know what the little pesty insect is. If you can catch one and send a pretty close-up picture it would help. Put it in the freezer for 10 minutes if you need to get it to hold still!

Another way to look at the problem, is to realize that even small annoying insects are feeding other good bugs, birds and spiders that help us with really annoying insects like mosquitos.

Looking forward to your pictures,

Hi and thanks for the pictures. This looks a lot like a Non-biting Midge, but they are so small it's really hard to get a good ID. If this is correct, the main think you can do is not over water the lawn. This is hard to do with the rain we have had, but the current recommendation is 1/4 inch at a time, 3 or 4 times a week when it doesn't rain. Wet soil is where they live and, well, this is Oregon! Encouraging spiders to trap them, predators to eat them (plant flowers like alyssum) and wearing long sleeves will keep them at bay until the summer arrives to stay and the population goes down.
