White Pine and orange fungus issue #868533

Asked May 15, 2024, 12:05 PM EDT

Hello, I have white pines that are mostly lined on the edge of my wooded property located on the South East side on Mancelona in Antrim County. I have my vegetable garden located in front of this area as well. As you can see on this picture we are getting an orange fungus on our pine trees. It is spreading to the other pines in this area. Very concerned. Could you help me identify what this is? And, any advice on what we should do about it?

Expert Response

Hi Amelia,
My first thought is white pine blister rust.

However, in order for this to be the case, there must be a gooseberry, or ribes species growing nearby as the pathogen requires both hosts. Do you by chance have gooseberry, or ribes growing in your yard, or in a neighbor's yard?

If, after reading through the material provided, you feel this is not white pine blister rust, please send additional pictures of the entire tree and I can take another look.

Thank you,
-Julie
