Replace urban sidewalk tree #868520

Asked May 15, 2024, 10:48 AM EDT

I live in downtown Baltimore on the south side of an east/west-running street; it’s pretty shady. The city has just cut down the maple in front of my house. They have a great list of street tree options: https://bcrp.baltimorecity.gov/sites/default/files/StreetTreeSpeicesList_BaltimoreCity_4-20-2016_FINAL.pdf It’s so great it’s overwhelming! I’d like to plant a native tree there. Can you give me guidance on the best options, please? Thank you.

Expert Response

Hi,

That is an extensive list! First we would recommend you stick with a native or a native cultivar. A photo would be helpful so we can see the space that it is going to be planted in. Or you can think about how large the tree will be at maturity and the planting space. Is the planting median only a few feet wide? or is the street tree more on your front yard ? Do you need to be concerned about branches eventually hitting your home?

Here are some of our recommendations from that list that would be on the smaller size:

American Yellowwood

American Hornbeam

Blackhaw Viburnum- if you can get a single trunk tree

Southern hawthorn

American Hophornbeam

If you think you have space for a larger tree we can offer a few more suggestions.

Hi, Emily, thank you! I’m attaching a picture taken from my front stoop of the planting space. It’s about 3.5x4 feet. This is the 800 block of Hollins St, the first block west of MLK in downtown Baltimore. Several trees on the block are misshapen because they’ve been so secerely pruned away from the houses. So, yes, we need to be concerned about branches and also roots lifting the sidewalk.  If you have further recommendations, I’m here for it! I’d really like a native tree that has brilliant fall foliage. Thanks for your help.

Hi Abigail,

Thank you for the photo. That is a tough space to plant a tree. It looks like some of the tree areas on different parts of your block are larger. Is that a possibility for the city to change the size of the tree well?

So if it is a small space still, a few options stand out to us:

Redbud (but they tend to be short lived especially as street trees)

Serviceberry

Blackhaw Viburnum

Hawthorn

Let us know if you have further questions with tree options.

We are assuming the city will also be planting and removing the stump?

Emily

Thanks, Emily, this is very helpful. Yes, my understanding is that the city will grind out the stump and Tree Baltimore will supply and plant the tree. I’ll definitely circle back if I have more questions as the process unfolds!
