Ant hills #868467

Asked May 14, 2024, 8:33 PM EDT

I recently discovered that there is a growing ant problem on my front lawn. What is the best way to get rid of ants? The smaller ones are starting to creep into the house.

Expert Response

It may be unsightly, but ant mounds in lawns don't typically need treatment.

Keeping a barrier free of mulch and plants in the first 1 - 2 feet adjacent to the home will help prevent unwanted insects from crawling up and into homes.

If insecticides are needed, use one with one of the following active ingredients and confirm that the product is allowable in lawns: Sevin, bifenthrin, permethrin, cyfluthrin, or esfenvalerate. A dust or granules would be better than an aerosol, since the aerosol won't kill the ants living underground.
