Powdery Mildew -Ninebarks #868385

Asked May 14, 2024, 12:29 PM EDT

Hi, I have a set of 3 ninebarks smaller dark leaves-variety similar to Diablo but I can’t recall the name) NE corner of home that have powdery mildew. I am wondering if I should replace them rather than trying to combat the mildew. Also have a larger MN Sunrise on west side with same problem. If I get the mildew under control, can I keep it at bay or will this be a constant battle? Thanks for advice.

Expert Response

Ninebark has known susceptibility to powdery mildew. Giving shrubs room for air movement can decrease it. Once established it is difficult to eliminate. Although it can be visibly unwelcome it typically does not impact the health of the plant. If you want to fully eliminate it is suggested to plant shrubs that are resistant. if you are still interested in ninebark, Little Devil and Summer Wine are resistant varieties.
