maintenance of new spruce trees. #868381

Asked May 14, 2024, 12:17 PM EDT

I've just planted 8 spruce trees on my property. They are 12-15 feet in height, trunk diameter around 8".  They were planted by a professional, i then spaded in dirt to fill the hole. I'm watering regularly, but could use advice on two issues:  1.  how much to water and how frequently  2.  What should I fertilizer with?  Any other advice is appreciated.

Expert Response

Hey,
Thanks for your great resources.

I got online and found useful information.

I’ll water daily if soil not saturated for 6 weeks then every other day.
Sounds like no fertilizer is mandated.

No need for response.  Thanks!

Hello - and yes, you are correct!

Here's a good publication to follow: https://extension.umn.edu/planting-and-growing-guides/watering-newly-planted-trees-and-shrubs

Most importantly, following summer, focusing on fall and winter watering will be essential. We recommend watering once per month when temperatures are above 40 degrees, BUT spruce are very susceptible to winter desiccation, so I would recommend twice per month.

The goal for now is to keep the root ball moist with very regular water to keep the roots hydrated and encourage them to push new growth.
