Dead? Winged euonymus bush.. #868380

Asked May 14, 2024, 12:16 PM EDT

A large bush at the entrance to our home was girdled by deer the winter before last. Last year the bush still appeared to survive, but this year that is not the case. I cannot replace it with the same as the are now considered noxious?? I still have two much smaller bushes of the same at the corners of the house and would like something to match, if I have to replace it. Thoughts?

Expert Response

Following is a remarkably comprehensive list of shrubs that may be suitable replacements, though not a virtual match, for the remaining Euonymus.

Viburnum species have been widely planted for landscape purposes, but invasive Viburnum leaf beetles recently found in Minnesota (2019) threaten the utility of many.  Some viburnum species are resistant, but many of those most commonly planted attract these pests.  Choose carefully.
