Hosta vanished #868363

Asked May 14, 2024, 11:07 AM EDT

My son has had hostas growing along his patio for years. This year nothing has come up -dug around and found a few very weak tips with vey little root. We had moved a few to other places in the yard and they are doing well. There were about 10 plants- hard to believe voles would eat that many roots over winter-no vole trails noted in his grass this spring. Are there diseases that would do this and what signs would we look for-would hate to replant if that was the cause. Thanks

Hard to believe the hostas didn’t come up, they are usually very tough plants. Things to consider would be de icing salt water runoff, weed and feed accident after fertilizing a lawn, lawn company mistake, vole or gopher  damage could be a factor but as you pointed out one would expect to see the tunnels, and if the edge of the patio is shady they might not be up yet. Flooding seems an unlikely cause since hostas survive drought and standing water for short periods. I am sorry I only have speculations to offer.
