How do I get rid of clover and the pictured from my fruit trees?

Montgomery County Maryland

Expert Response

If I understand your question correctly, you have clover and the above weeds under your fruit trees and you wish to get rid of them. I would suggest keeping the clover as it will support pollinators and encourage to hang out near the trees for when they flower. Also the clover is adding nitrogen into the soil, benefiting your trees.

Pesticide laws vary by state and Montgomery County has its own tighter restrictions than the rest of Maryland. Contacting the Montgomery County Extension Master Gardeners at <personal data hidden> will get you the most accurate information on what can be applied around your trees that is safe for your trees and in compliance with local laws.

The clover sounds great as you described it, but that and the other weed as pictured, that grows out of a "bulb" with a purple flower has spread all over the yard and I can't catch up extracting it out. I want to enjoy my yard and keep my zoysia but don't really want to replace my weed infected grass with new zoysia sod. It is really expensive. Is there any way to get rid of these 2 weeds especially from my fruit trees as I use my grass clippings for my veggie compost?

Again, I need to differ you to your local Extension office as they can give you the information of what is legal to use in Montgomery County.  Maryland's pesticide laws are different than here in Virginia. What is allowed in Virginia isn't always allowed in Maryland and vice versa.

That said the violets (one of the 2 weeds in the picture) are extremely resistant to herbicides. Digging them out or repeated applications of herbicides is generally the only way to control them. You're local Extension office will be able to refer your to the most effective chemicals available to you under Maryland law
