Queen bald faced hornet #868347

Asked May 14, 2024, 9:54 AM EDT

I have a queen Bald faced hornet in a big box. I don’t want to kill it but the last several years we have had to have someone come and get rid of these nests. I thought I had drowned her yesterday and this morning she is very much alive. I am happy if someone would like to observe her. Otherwise I guess I will take her far away and let her go. Any ideas? It said not to leave name, so I won’t.

Expert Response

Insects are actually very tough to die from lack of oxygen. I have put honey bees inside a ziplock bag, filled with CO2, and bees can wake up even after a 10-15 min exposure with no problem.  This is because they can close their spiracles and lower their metabolism in response of low levels of oxygen.  I would say drive at least one mile way and release her.   Zachary.
