Do slugs in Michigan carry disease? Is the soil or the string beans nibbled by the slugs affected?

Expert Response
Hi Willian, thanks for the question.
The slug itself is probably not an issue. but like so many other critters, slugs and snails can contaminate produce with pathogens. The slug itself can carry a parasite. This emphasizes the need to thoroughly wash any produce. Properly cooking will further remove the risk of someone getting sick. If you suspect damage by slugs on your beans, wash thoroughly and cut off nibbled areas and cook properly.
