Black Walnut tolerance #868312

Asked May 13, 2024, 9:56 PM EDT

Hello! I know that generally, peonies are on the list of shrubs/perennials that do not tolerate juglone. However, I do know that our neighbor has many peonies that have thrived for over a decade well within the drip line of their mature black walnut tree. My neighbor thought she recalled that it was the specific type of peony that is tolerant. I am aware that there are the lactiflora, itoh, and hybrid varieties, and I’m just wondering if you can advise me as to which type does in fact tolerate juglone. Thank you!

Thank you for reaching out to ask2.extension.

I really didn’t find anything with facts to list what peonies would tolerate juglone.  Most sites suggested not planting them near walnut trees.

Sorry  I couldn’t be more help.
