Is this wild ginger? #868265

Or is it something more sinister - like garlic mustard? I'm hoping for wild ginger!

Expert Response

Unfortunately, no, this isn't Wild Ginger and is Garlic Mustard. Wild Ginger foliage is entire (no scalloped edges), and while the foliage shape of Garlic Mustard can change a bit between its first-year growth and second-year growth, it doesn't get too close in characteristics to Wild Ginger. The impressed veins on the leaf are also more prominent on Garlic Mustard, so overall, the Wild Ginger foliage looks a bit "smoother" in texture. When they bloom, the differences will be much more stark, but until then, these traits tend to be enough to separate the two.

Rats. I'll put on the gloves and start pulling.

Thanks, Miri.
