Fothergilla Gardenii not blooming #868232

Asked May 13, 2024, 3:08 PM EDT

I live in Leelanau County. In 2018 I built and put in 4 Fothergilla Gardenii plants. They have bloomed every year. Last year 3 of them grew very tall and I cut them back - this spring they came back very green and healthy but no blooms. The one that looks like it is going to die is the only one with blooms. I've attached some photos. Should I not prune them? They are by a front porch and I don't want them tall. Should I fertilize them? Any advice would be appreciated.

Pat - Fothergillas do not require pruning but for sure you can prune them to keep them at the size at the appropriate size for your area.  That being said, the best time to lightly prune them is immediately after flowering.  You can prune out dead branches at any time.  Because Fothergillas bloom on the previous year's growth, pruning may reduce the flowers for the following year.

As the article below states, this plant is a slow grower so you can fertilize in spring to encourage a faster growth.   But it sounds like that is not what you are looking for and you shouldn't need to fertilize them just because you pruned.  I suspect next year you will see blooms again.

Hope that helps.
