Joe-pye weed division and transplant #868229

Asked May 13, 2024, 3:03 PM EDT

I have an at least 2-3’ diameter Joe-pye weed with a ferry ring. It is like cement and we can’t dig it up. We can’t even get the shovel in the ground around it. My husband thinks the only way is to poison it, but there has to be a way to dig it out and transplant portions of it someplace else. It is beautiful, but it has gotten too large. How can we manually remove it so we can move it? Thank you!

Expert Response

That can be difficult.  One method of removal is to use a broad fork or mechanical rototiller to dig into the ground around it, water it thoroughly and when the water has filtered down, use the fork to dig more deeply.  You can also insert straw, leaves or sand into the crevices made by the fork. This will help loosen the soil.  It may take a number of digging efforts to accomplish your goal.  Good luck.
