Question about Tiger Eye Sumac Disease #868209

Asked May 13, 2024, 1:57 PM EDT

I have a Tiger Eye Sumac tree entering its 3rd spring here in Colorado (Littleton). Until now, this plant has been healthy and low maintenance, but this year it is having trouble. I am hoping you have suggestions for treatment, or if the tree should be removed ASAP. The attached photos illustrate the symptoms I have listed below.

Symptoms:

>There are scars on the bark

>Some scars have black stuff in them

>Some new leaves are brown/black and curling

Other Notes:

>I pruned a branch from the bottom during the first week of March

>I have never seen an animal harm the plant, and overall do not know where the scarring came from

Expert Response

Hello Chris,
Thank you for the pictures and description of your sumac.

Leaf symptoms we are seeing include wilting, curling, and yellowing. Other symptoms we are noticing include dieback of branches and black cankers on the trunk.

If possible, a few more pictures would allow us to confirm our observations. Specifically, a close up of the healthy and damaged leaves, and close up of the cut on the branch you removed.

A picture of the opposite side of the tree would be very beneficial.

We also have a few questions:

-When did you cut off that branch? Did you make any other pruning cuts recently?

-Is this tree watered on a regular basis? If so, how is it watered, how often, and how much?

-Have you or a neighbor used any herbicides near or around that tree? If so, when?

-Have you recently added new mulch to that surrounding area or soil amendments?

With these answers and pictures, we would be able to give you a more accurate diagnosis.

Thanks in advance for your reply.
