Community Garden location #868186

Asked May 13, 2024, 12:40 PM EDT

I am helping start a community garden. The location selected is on the prairie where corn and soybeans were planted in the past. It is very windy since it is out in the open in Southwest MN. What do you recommend about the wind?

Expert Response

Hi Sandy,

Boy, you hit the nail on the head about the wind...it's a problem. As someone who has been trying to garden in both Hennepin and St. Louis Counties lately I know how much the wind is affecting my metro garden. You need some kind of hard structure/fencing. Don't bother using any cloth , the wind will tear it away so fast. Depending on your aesthetic needs, use what ever you can to make a loose fencing on the windward side. Look for creative ideas on the internet, there are lots.

Good for you for starting a community garden !
