No-Mow May #868174

Asked May 13, 2024, 11:30 AM EDT

I'm confused about No-Mow May. We've got a healthy crop of dandelions and grass that's getting thicker all the time. The lawn has been mowed once. When can we mow it again?

Expert Response

Hi Jeanne,

Not mowing your grass for a solid month does little for the environment, since cultivated lawns aren't needed by any native species. You can actually harm you grass by letting it grow too long and severely mowing it later. That's why many people are now talking about slow-mow May.

Dandelions will usually send up new flowers a few days after being mowed. Go ahead and mow.

Here's more information from the U of M:

Good luck.

Thank you!  This echoes what I've heard.

I've also heard it's good to offer plants with early flowers.  Not sure if they need to be natives.  I'll make a note for next year.
