After they bloom #868172

Asked May 13, 2024, 11:25 AM EDT

Do I have to leave the foliage to die off after plants have bloomed? I am specifically referring to daffodils, snowdrops and snowflakes? Help please.

Expert Response

Spring-flowering bulbs should have their foliage die off naturally (not removed prematurely) after they bloom and go dormant. Otherwise, the foliage cannot continue to feed the bulb, giving the plant enough stored energy to grow and bloom well in future years. It might be an eyesore for a couple weeks or so as the foliage withers, but it's always best to let it detach on its own rather than clipping them off early.
