Grubs in Vegetable Garden #868164

Asked May 13, 2024, 10:49 AM EDT

Hello, I live in Columbus, Ohio and was tilling my vegetable garden this weekend in preparation for planting some tomatoes, peppers, and herbs and noticed a lot of white grubs and worms in my soil. I am happy about the worms, but not about the white grubs. My garden is 16 foot by 8 foot and I saw on average 3 or 4 white grubs per square foot in my soil. Do you have any suggestions or resources on how to get rid of grubs in a vegetable garden? Thanks, Vince

Expert Response

Good morning and thank you for your question.  It is definitely that time of year as I am also seeing grubs in my veggie beds. I've just been tossing them in the lawns for the birds to enjoy.   The grubs were likely there munching on the roots of grasses and weeds present in your beds as that is their preferred food source. 3-4 per square foot seems high, but really control is not warranted unless you are seeing closer to twice that.  Turning the soil and just hand picking can be a safe way to keep numbers low.  I wish you all the best with your gardens.

Thanks.
