Options for wood used in raised beds for edible crops. #868158

Asked May 13, 2024, 10:22 AM EDT

We currently need to rebuild raised beds for vegetable gardens. The beds were originally constructed out of raw, untreated lumber, and have lasted about 7 years before the sides started collapsing. We'd like a more lasting solution this time, but are unsure of the current thinking on using treated lumber for edible crop beds. Some people seem to think newer treated lumber is ok, but purists are recommending cedar. What is the MSU advise on this?

There isn't a lot of current research on this. MSU Extension does not have specific advice on this issue or take a stance.

One of my colleagues is against using treated lumber. On the other hand, I am willing to use it in my vegetable garden.

Here is an article from Penn State Extension that explains the issue in detail and steps you can take to minimize your vegetables' contact with chemicals

If you are concerned, then I would err on the side of caution and use an untreated lumber or use a different material entirely, like rocks.
