White Pine getting attacked #868144

Asked May 13, 2024, 8:04 AM EDT

We discovered this on our White Pine the other day. There are also a couple of branches with brown needles. Is it possible to treat or is it too late? The tree is around 20 ft tall.

Hennepin County Minnesota

Expert Response

Good Morning Betsy,

Thank you for contacting the U of M Extension Service.

Here is a link to the U of M Extension Yard and Garden website: https://extension.umn.edu/news/yellow-bellied-sapsucker-damage

The holes in lines in the trunk could be from the yellow bellied sapsucker. The dead branches could be a sign of white pine blister rust. https://extension.umn.edu/plant-diseases/white-pine-blister-rust   This information states:

  • Diseased pine branches should be pruned out of the tree before the infection comes within 4 inches of the main trunk.

The drought we've had the past few years has stressed trees. I am hoping you have been able to water the trees. The brown branches may be "flagging" for the white pine blister rust.

Good Luck!

Thanks for your response.

Maybe it’s not obvious from the picture but the holes/damage are all around the circumference of the trunk.  It’s not a branch.  If the trunk is affected then we can’t save tree at all and must chop down?

Thank you,

Betsy

Betsy,

If the bark is off the trunk all the way around, the tree will die. At this point, there appears to be a lot of damage from the sapsucker.  Your tree is probably struggling but may survive this.  I would also be concerned about the white pine blister rust.  I would take a "wait and see" attitude as it takes a long time for trees to respond. Prune out the brown branches as explained in the white pine blister rust info.

Good Luck!
