Renovation for yard #868108
Asked May 12, 2024, 6:23 PM EDT
I spent the winter taking care of my new 3 chickens. They have destroyed the lawn and other plants. The yard is covered with a mixture of straw, hay and gorilla mulch. If I roto-till this mixture into the soil, what kind of fertilizer should I add? I would like to grow a lawn but don't know what kind to plant. I live at 7350 ft elevation. I will have an enclosure for the chickens.
Any suggestions?

Hello Nanette,
Thank you for contacting CSU extension center master gardener help desk. I sympathize with your lawn issue.
Below I have attached a link to a website that provides information for renovating a lawn. Pay special attention to how to prepare the site for a new lawn. Roto-tilling is really not recommended. Raking the debris off the top is probably a better way to go.
Also, I would suggest Googling “Turf type selection in Colorado Springs” to find information about selecting a lawn type.
Good luck with your lawn and please contact us again if you have more questions.
Happy gardening,
Jasper B.
