mullein? #868105

Asked May 12, 2024, 6:17 PM EDT

We have about 10 of these huge plants that have popped up this year for the first time. We think they are mullein. Should we dig them up? Thank you

Anne Arundel County Maryland

Expert Response

Denise, that's exactly what they are. It is a common weed that usually pops up in poor, disturbed soil.

About five species occur in Maryland, none of which are native. This appears to most closely match Common Mullein (Verbascum thapsus); here's a gallery: https://www.marylandbiodiversity.com/view/2799

I would dig them up to prevent them from going to seed and spreading.

Thanks for contacting Ask Extension.
