Tuber transplant timing? #868097

I'm still a newbie to dahlias, and gardening in general. My yard has been in the process of being majorly landscaped so when my tubers arrived in April, I planted each one in it's own 5 gallon pot about half full of soil. My question - the landscaping will probably be done by the end of the month. At this point, I'm not seeing any sprouts above soil. Should I transplant the tubers in the ground as soon as I can or wait for them to develop a bit in their pots? Does it matter how much the tuber/plant has established itself by the time I transplant them?

Expert Response
The advice I can find is to transplant from a pot to the garden with minimal root disturbance. I can’t find anything published that gets directly to your question. As an experienced gardener, I recommend you transplant earlier rather than later. My idea is that the roots then have maximum time to reach out into your garden soil.
