Peony Damaged or Sick? Please help #868072
Asked May 12, 2024, 12:20 PM EDT
Hi, my peonies this year did not grow right. They look deformed. Some grew back, but the stems and leaves are curly and deformed. One of my plants started to come it but has not grown at all. I am not sure if this is disease. I did sprinkle flower and rose care granules earlier in the spring.
I am hoping I can care for them and next year they will return. I could not find anything online that looked similar to them to help me diagnose.
Thank you

Both examples resemble herbicide injury, and unfortunately plants with as heavy a damage as the first photo shows do not usually recover. Was any weed killer used in that area in the past several weeks, or could it have been used nearby and drifted over on the breeze? If the mulch is relatively fresh, was it the type sold with included weed control? (Some come pre-treated with herbicide, though they will note this on the packaging.) If you did not use herbicide, did the flower and rose care granules you applied get put down with a container you used to put herbicide in? Sometimes it doesn't take much residue to contaminate a container that can then affect other pesticide applications made afterwards. (What was the intended purpose of the granules? If it contained a pesticide or fertilizer, was there a pest present earlier, or did the plants show indications of a nutrient deficiency?)
