Is it too late for our Peach tree? It seems to have a fungus #868016

Asked May 11, 2024, 3:37 PM EDT

We just noticed our peach tree has some sort of fungus. All the leaves seem to be affected. Is's about 10yrs old. Have we missed an opportunity this season for combating this? We keep an organic garden and a pollinator garden in a fairly small backyard.

Hi Linda,

Your tree has a fungal disease caused peach leaf curl.  his disease only causes [problems on the leaves.  It looks like some of the leaves are healthy so the tree will do okay this year.

Time for management for peach leaf curl is early in the season when the leaves are first coming out.  I would select an organic-approved copper fungicide and apply it twice with a weekly interval early next season.

You can also gather up the leaves at the end of the season and compost them as the fungus will overwinter in those leaves.

Best regards,

it seems like I should not compost the leaves with leaf curl. Am W thinking incorrectly?

Yes, after I looked into this further, the peach leaf curl fungus actually overwinters on buds and on the bark.  This will be your target with copper sprays next spring as the buds are breaking and then maybe 1 week later as the leaves are coming out,
