Expert Response

Thanks for your question.

Begonias are beautiful plants that come in various shapes, sizes, and colors. In most cases, they're relatively easy to care for. As you may know, there are four general types of begonias: cane begonias, tuberous begonias, rhizomatous begonias, and wax begonias. None of them can survive being outside during Minnesota winters. See the following for additional information about them:

In looking at the above sites, take note of the following:

1). Begonias do best in bright, indirect light. Too much direct sunlight can scorch their leaves, so place them where they'll get bright but filtered light.

2). Keep the surrounding soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Only water the plant when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Water thoroughly, allowing excess water to drain out from the bottom of the pot. This implies that whatever pot you use, it has four or five drain holes in its bottom.

3). Begonias love humidity. You can increase humidity by misting the leaves regularly or by placing the pot on a tray filled with pebbles and water.

4). They prefer moderate temperatures between 60°F to 75°F.

5). Use well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. A mix of peat moss, perlite, and compost works well for begonias.

6). Feed your begonias with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer once a month during the growing season (spring and summer). Dilute the fertilizer to half strength to avoid burning the roots.

7). Regularly pinch off dead or faded flowers and yellowing leaves to encourage new growth and maintain the plant's shape.

8). Keep an eye out for common pests like aphids, mealybugs, and spider mites. If you notice any infestation, gently wash the leaves with soapy water or use an insecticidal soap. Prevent diseases by avoiding overwatering and providing good air circulation.

9). If you would like to overwinter them inside, reduce watering in the winter months. you may need to mist the leaves periodically to counteract the dry indoor air.

Good luck. They are funl plants. Thanks for consulting us.
