growing radishes #868009

Asked May 11, 2024, 1:53 PM EDT

1. If 2 packets of radish seeds are planted in a 6' X 12, planted what percentage of the seeds normally should produce radishes? 2. What percentage of the radishes produced normally should be 1/2'' in size or larger? 3. Assuming that the soil and sun are right, is the amount of fine loose soil above and below the seed the critical factor that determines the percentage of seeds that will become radishes 1/2'' in diameter or larger? 4. Should there be about 1'' of fine loose soil above the seeds and about 1'' below? 5. Does it matter very much if the seeds were seeds left over from the previous spring? I planted 2 packets of seeds this spring in mid March but only 1/4 to 3/8 produced radishes and only about 1/4 of the radishes were 1/2'' in diameter or larger. The seeds were seeds left over from the previous spring. I think that the reason for the poor yield was that I planted most of the seeds on compact soil and merely covered them with fine loose soil instead of having about 1'' of fine loose soil below and 1'' of fine loose soil above the seeds. Last spring, when I planted seeds in ordinary compact soil, the yield was even worse. I sent this same question to you a few days ago and received no reply.

Hi, our system shows that the following response was sent to you on May 6th. Maybe it went to a spam folder?

If the radish seed was packaged for 2024, the germination rate should be at least 75%. Radish seed is good for about 5 years if it is stored in a dry, cool location.

If the radish plants have adequate space, the majority of the storage roots should be >0.5 in. Seeds should be covered with 1/4-in. to 1/2-in. of soil. The soil should be loose, high in organic matter, and without rocks. Radishes grow poorly in compacted soil and soils high in clay and low in organic matter.
