I would like to plant a fig tree (variety unknown) in my front yard. It would be 10 feet from the property line with my neighbor. Is this too close? The neighbor has agreed with the tree being planted. I plan to keep the tree pruned so it remains small. Do roots need to be trimmed?

Expert Response
Fig shrubs (they're definitely more of a shrub in our region than a tree) don't often get much more than ten feet high and wide in our area, so that sounds fine as long as the neighbor is okay with any branches eventually crossing over the property line. We presume the location receives full sun (6-8 or more hours of sun in summer), and drains well, which are requirements for figs to prosper. We have tips about pruning on our recently-revised Growing Figs in Maryland page. Trimming might be needed to periodically thin-out crowded stems or excessive growth, or to trim off winter-killed branch tips, but overall, routine cutbacks are not usually necessary.

Hi Miri,
Thank you for the detailed reply! If I plant the shrub 10 feet from the property line and it gets 10 feet wide wouldn’t it be 5 feet from my neighbors property line?
Thanks!

Yes, it will still be on your side of the property line in that case.
