I have this bush but not sure what’s it is. It originally was a lilac bush I planted it bloomed for a couple of years and this took over it’s not bloomed. I see no type of budding. I’ve been threatening to pull it out but keep giving it a chance. Can you tell me what it is I’ve enclosed a photo of the leaf and the bush itself. Thanks

Hi Sharon,

Your shrub appears to be a "Late Lilac".

Late lilac is native to northern China and is a medium to large hardy shrub with stout spreading branches. It has an oval to irregularly shaped crown. Flowers are white, or rose to pale lavender. It generally flowers 1- 2 weeks “later” than common lilac, and the color fades quickly.

You plant likely started from a seed since it is a volunteer in your yard, so it many not meet all the characteristics of a typical Late Lilac. Since it has not bloomed as yet, consider it its needs and what might be causing that, namely: It is less drought tolerant and needs water, full sun. Doubt you have been pruning, if so, hold off for now. If despite all that your lilac still refuses to bloom, consider spreading a little fertilizer at its base in the spring. Use PRO-MIX organic-based Flower Boost Garden Fertilizer 12-28-12. Also, avoid fertilizing your lawn with nitrogen-rich fertilizers within 3-4 yards of your lilac.

There is hope, so don't give up yet! Good luck and thanks for contacting us.
