We planted 8 Gaillardia flowers last year. They bloomed well during the summer til fall. I cut them back with the Hostas.
They are all but one brown with no new growth.
What may have gone wrong?

You've not told me much about the growing conditions. My guess is that your soil is too heavy or poorly drained, but that's only a guess. Gaillardias need full sun and sandy soil. Read here:
