Please help identify this #867882

Asked May 10, 2024, 12:21 PM EDT

This plant is growing along a swamp, amidst nettle, Canada goldenrod, and elderberry. There are several plantlets within 12 in. of this one. iNaturalist is unable to identify it. I don't know how to look it up on MN Wildflower site without knowing the name or family. Can you please identify it or help me with my quest?

Expert Response

Thanks for the question.

It was a bit of a challenge to ID this, mainly because no flowers were present. My best guess is that it is type of Dianthus called Deptford Pink (Dianthus armeria). It is considered a wildflower and prefers moist areas. A definitive ID would await until it develops flowers. They should be a striking shade of pink. See the following:

Interesting flower. I have never encountered this before. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.
