What is wrong with our tree? #867833

Asked May 10, 2024, 2:00 AM EDT

Could you please help me identify the problem with our ornamental cherry tree? We cut off some of the dead wood, only to find some of it completely hollowed out. Other branches we being eaten but we could not see anything that was alive that could cause the problem. Help please!!!

Hi Cameron and thanks for your question and great pictures of your cherry tree problem. As there are no insects to identify, I can make my best guess that you had some damage, probably from the cherry bark tortrix, and then rot set in, causing the extensive damage in the pictures. I'll attach an article about the moth, but there is no home treatment at this time.

If the tree is not too far gone, follow the "Management-cultural control" section of the article. If you want a positive identification and professional help for the tree, call an ISA certified arborist to come out and take a look. Try to get two opinions so you can compare diagnoses. The following site will help you find someone near you.
