Rodent damage at base of maple tree #867823

Asked May 09, 2024, 9:54 PM EDT

Will the removal of bark on a 3 inch diameter, sugar maple likely by a rodent, cause issues for growing a healthy mature tree? There are fewer branches on that side of The tree. I discovered this damage after the burlap was removed after planting The tree. Wondering if I should press to have the tree replaced from where I purchased it, or is it not a big Deal? What problems might we expect down the road? The bark removal is about halfway around the circumference of the tree.

Good Morning Brian,

Thank you for contacting the U of M Extension Service.

If you purchased this tree with the existing wound, I would press to have the tree replaced. If the bark is removed all the way around, the tree will die. With this large wound, your tree will struggle. From your photo on the left, it appears the bark is lose on the right side of the trunk, also. I would be surprised if it thrives.

If you scroll down, it discusses animal damage.

Good Luck!
