Bumpy Yards #867819

Asked May 09, 2024, 9:06 PM EDT

Three of my neighbors and myself have very bumpy uneven yards. We noticed it mid summer last year and thought maybe the lack of rain had something to do with it. It seems we have had plenty of rain and the bumps are still there. The grass on all of our lawns is in great shape….lush and green. None of us have noticed any holes or of seen any voles or earthworms which others have said could be the problem. I am wondering if you have any ideas or if I could send a soil sample in for testing. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Sandy Akers

Expert Response

The most common cause of bumpy lawns is night crawlers and fixing it is difficult. Aeration can help because it provides space to flatten the bumps. Frost heave can cause bumps and unevenness. Top dressing with garden soil can help smooth it out. The most effective method is to smooth out the dirt with a bobcat but that is rarely considered if a lawn looks good.
