Creeping Charley eradication #867797

Asked May 09, 2024, 5:25 PM EDT

We have the plant taking over! I am concerned about how to get rid of it because we have dogs, kids, squirrels, rabbits and birds in the year. I have read that using a herbicide based on oils is less toxic. Do you have any suggestions? Help!!

Expert Response

Oil-based herbicides are less toxic, but possibly not as effective as a product containing triclopyr or glyphosate. Look for a non-selective herbicide that is labeled safe for pets and children. The most effective time to apply these herbicides is in the fall.  The U of Mn has prepared a worksheet about how to deal with common weeds, including creeping Charlie.  See

Dogs and cats may be exposed by eating herbicide-treated grass.  They can also be exposed by walking on recently-treated lawns. Don't let them out until the herbicide has dried completely. If it rains in the next day or two after application, wait until the treated area has dried before letting your children or pets on it.
