Nice find! This is a non-venomous species and appears to be an Eastern Kingsnake. While widespread in about half the state, they are not commonly seen. If you're curious, you can learn more about the life cycle and habits of this species in these resources: While not in this reference because it's not often seen, you can learn about other typically-encountered snake species in the DNR's Common Snakes of Maryland Photo Guide, which might be useful for future sightings in addition to the Maryland and Virginia lists above.

Kingsnakes primarily prey on other snakes, but can also eat a variety of other small animals. As with other snakes, they are beneficial to have in the landscape and prefer to avoid confrontations with people, though like Watersnakes in particular, Kingsnakes can be defensive when cornered or feeling threatened.
