Need assistance identifying indoor ants #867762

Asked May 09, 2024, 2:29 PM EDT

Hello, after a 2 day absence, I’ve returned to a (somewhat) minor ant infestation thus far in my kitchen. Several ants 1/3-1/2” long spotted on counter near sink, typically 1-2 at a time. I keep food sealed, but one ant was on a glob of caramel outside a caramel bottle. Can you please help identify, and recommend the best course of action to eradicate these? I’m in a stand-alone apartment above a garage. Thank you

Expert Response

Thanks for your question.

Unfortunately I cannot make a precise identification of the ant in the picture. Typically such identification requires microscopic examination of them. If I had to make a guess, and that’s all it would be, this might be a carpenter ant. These ants are slightly less than ½ inch in length, which is consistent with your measurement. Carpenter ants prefer moist areas and have a particular fondness for sweets. This is also consistent with your observations.

Here is some background information on ants, including carpenter ants, that can be found in Minnesota dwellings. Also described at these sites are remedial actions that you might take:
