Wild Rye seedlings - what to do with them? #867750

Asked May 09, 2024, 1:32 PM EDT

I have the native wild rye in my native garden. It has shed seeds that have germinated and I now have a huge "patch". I don't want to devote so much space to this grass in my garden. Should I dig out the plantlets and put them into my larger savannah area? Or should I just dig them out and compost them?

Good Morning Patricia,

Thank you for contacting the U of M Extension Service.

Here is a link to MN Wildflowers website about wild rye: https://www.minnesotawildflowers.info/search?kw=wild+rye

I would trim them so they don't go to seed or dig them out. No need to transplant unless you want the plants in another area.

Good Luck!
