Hello, Which fungal pathogens are common in southeast alaska soil, especially in swampy or boggy areas? Do you have a list? Also, do you know which fungicides would work for plants or trees attacked by any of the known pathogens in southeast soils?

Expert Response

Hi Robert and/or Elizabeth,
Unfortunately, the prevalence of naturally occurring pathogens in forest soils is not an area UAF Extension has been able to research or provide specialized expertise.
From a food production perspective, I am not aware of any pathogenic fungi of concern occurring in Southeast Alaska. The closest soil-borne pathogen I have seen record of is Phytophthora affecting alders in more northern parts of AK.
Fortunately, we do have a Forest Pathologist for SE AK with USDA Forest Health Protection, Forestry Sciences Lab, based here in Juneau. Her name is Robin Mulvey and her email is <personal data hidden>.
Robin may have some further information for you on the topic.
Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.
