Self-seedlings in the native garden #867715

Asked May 09, 2024, 11:36 AM EDT

...Another question from my native garden spring experience. Where there is bare soil, I have a lot of seedlings coming up (even though underground there may be root runners from other plants) Some may be weeds, but I think they may be legitimate natives. The areas are about 8-12 in. in diameter. What do you recommend? -let them be? -remove all of them by scraping the ground? -thin them with a judicious shallow cultivation? . ??? Thanks for all your good advice

Lathered are options.  Let them be until they get a little bigger and are easier to identify.  You could try to use a plant identification app such as PictureThis to identify the weeds from the native plants. This can be tricky and usually not effective when the plants are very small.
If you know the names of the natives nearby you could use Minnesota Wildflowers and see if they have pictures of younger plants. When they are that tightly packed together you could cull some of them out even if they are natives.  But if you wait you might be able to harvest some natives and replant them.
